Was James “Whitey” Bulger an Active Senior in Orange County Before His Capture?

Before James “Whitey” Bulger was captured in Santa Monica Wednesday night, the 81-year-old South Boston mobster may have spent some of his 16 years on the run in Orange County.

Before last night, the only FBI-acknowledged, California sightings of Bulger and his companion Catherine Greig, 60, were in Orange County. But Whitey may have been getting around even more than authorities let on.

The most solid sighting involved Greig. The FBI received a tip in 2000 that she got her hair
done at a Fountain Valley salon.

The Bureau also suspected Bulger may have been the elderly robber of three Orange County banks in 2005.

Perhaps Bulger was an even more active elderly Californian. An apparently still-outstanding robber known only as the “Geezer Bandit” hit 14 banks from August 2009 through this past May in Kern, Riverside, San Diego and San Luis Obispo counties.

The old man poses as a typical customer in line before handing the teller a note that reads, “Give me $50,000 or I will murder you.”

After the case of the Geezer Bandit got America's Most Wanted airtime, fan pages started popping up on Facebook. So have t-shirts, including one that states, “GEEZER BANDIT is my name GETTIN' AWAY is my game.”

Were they rooting for Whitey?
