Victory Bakery Reopens Where Wadiya Was

Oh, Wadiya, we miss you. You were OC's only Sri Lankan restaurant, and mere mention of your coconut sambal can put half the Weekly's food writers into rapturous sighs… but you're gone.

In Wadiya's place is Victory Bakery, which closed its enormous bakery-cum-restaurant on Brookhurst a month or so ago. The new Victory Bakery is still quite large and has plenty of tables, but does not serve meals–apparently they are expecting a large crowd of people to show up for coffee and knafe (pronounced “k'nah-feh”), the Palestinian dessert made up of thousands of threads of very fine phyllo pastry wrapped around sweet cheese or nuts, then soaked with rosewater-flavored syrup.

I asked the folks inside the new Victory Bakery (which started in this location many years ago) whether they intended to serve food again, and the answer was a firm negative. This is a shame–the Brookhurst location had the best yellow lentil soup I've ever had.

Victory Bakery can now be found at 949 S. Euclid St., Anaheim.
