[UPDATED with Suspect Dead and I.D.'d:] Anaheim Police Shooting Injures One


UPDATE, NOV. 9, 1:12 P.M.: The man shot by an Anaheim police officer near Casa Madrid Apartments on East Ball Road Friday later died.

He has been identified as Marcel Luis Ceja, 22, of Anaheim.

Ceja was among three pedestrians stopped by the unidentified officer just before noon. The cop later radioed in that he was chasing the pedestrians and that one had a firearm.

The reason the officer opened fire has not been disclosed, but
Sgt. Rick Martinez, the Anaheim police spokesman, says a loaded semi-automatic handgun was found nearby.

Ceja died several hours later at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

The two men who had been walking with Ceja were later detained, questioned and released, Martinez reports.

The
latest was just before noon today near Casa Madrid Apartments on East
Ball Road in Anaheim, where an officer confronted three men, one of whom
was holding a handgun, according to police.

Two of the men ran off, and for reasons that have not yet been disclosed,
the officer fired at a third who suffered undisclosed injuries and was
rushed to UCI Medical Center in Orange, say police, who added the handgun
was recovered.

The incident prompted the closing of lanes on both
sides of Ball Road between Sunkist Street and State College Boulevard,
as well as Katella High School and James M. Guinn Elementary School,
Benito Juarez Elementary School and Theodore Roosevelt Elementary
School.

The other two men were captured around 1:30 p.m., and the schools were reopened before the end bells rang.

No identities have been released.

An off-duty Santa Ana police officer shot and killed an unarmed Jason Richard Bitz, who'd been chased down by the cop who believed the Long Beach 23-year-old was breaking into a car in the lawman's Lakewood neighborhood Monday morning. Bitz's family says he's been given keys and permission to enter the car.

Two Huntington Beach officers shot and killed John Andrew Torres of Fullerton and Erick Catalan of Long Beach after a traffic stop in Westminster Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff's investigators later said the gang unit cops were following up on a report that Torres was armed.
