[UPDATED with Newport-Mesa Meeting:] Irvine Holds Town Hall on School Shootings

ORIGINAL POST, DEC. 18, 6:08 A.M.: In the wake of the mass shootings in Newton, Connecticut, the City of Irvine is holding a town hall meeting dedicated to school shootings and city preparedness to deal with such tragedies.

Newly sworn-in Irvine Mayor Steven Choi has invited the superintendents of the Irvine and Tustin unified school districts to participate in Wednesday's special meeting in the Irvine High School.

After an introduction by Choi, Irvine Unified Superintendent Terry Walker is scheduled to speak, followed by his Tustin Unified counterpart Gregory Franklin. Tustin Unified has schools within Irvine city boundaries.

The superintendents will be followed by Irvine Police Chief Dave Maggard, who “will provide an overview of the Public Safety Department's equipment, training and
special assignments,” reads a city announcement, “with other specifics explained by Lt. Dave Klug with
the Irvine Police Department.”

The public will be invited to ask the leaders questions at the program scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the campus theater at 4321 Walnut Ave., Irvine.

If you can't attend in person, the town hall will be taped for airing on ICTV-Channel 30 for Cox subscribers; Channel 99 for U-Verse subscribers; and through the city's homepage at cityofirvine.org. It will begin airing continuously from 4-10 p.m. Thursday and repeat in the following days, according to the city.

UPDATE, DEC. 18, 9:50 A.M.: The Newport-Mesa Unified School District is holding a special board meeting of its own in the wake of the recent school shootings tragedy.

Trustees, district officials and Newport Beach Deputy Police Chief David McGill are scheduled to meet about school safety at 2:30 p.m. roundtable today in the Roderick H. MacMillian Board Room
at the District Education Center, 2985 Bear St., Costa Mesa.
