[UPDATED with I.D.:] Teen Man Burns Hot Coals in Car to Off Himself: Authorities

UPDATE, NOV. 30, 9:47 A.M.: The “teen” who apparently tried to kill himself by lighting coals inside his gray Infiniti in a Ladera Ranch neighborhood Monday evening has been identified as a 27-year-old Cerritos man who was reported to Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies as missing, depressed and possibly suicidal earlier that day. The Orange County Register, which breaks the news, won't identify the man by name as his case is considered a suicide attempt.

ORIGINAL POST, NOV. 29, 3:03 P.M.: There could be thousands of reasons why a teen would attempt (or
complete) suicide, but a fellow in Ladera Ranch came up with a unique
way of trying last night.

He lit hot coals inside an older
Infiniti sedan to burn himself to death around 7:30 p.m. Monday in the
100 block of Sansovino, firefighters believe.

The teen ran away when passersby approached the Infiniti, which would become fully engulfed in flames, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. He likely got spooked and split.

He was described only as a white male in his late teens, wearing shorts but not shirt. Orange County sheriff's deputies called to the scene searched the area but did not find the teen. However, they have hooked up with family members who are helping in the search for him.

It's unknown whether he suffered burns or other injuries from the fire.
