[UPDATED with I.D.:] Lloyd Middaugh, 2011 OC Homicide No. 69: Homeless Man Stabbed on River Trail


UPDATE, JAN. 2, 10:32 A.M.: The transient whose body was discovered Wednesday along the Santa Ana River Trail near the 91 freeway in Anaheim Hills has been identified as 42-year-old Lloyd Middaugh. The last known address for Middaugh, who was stabbed to death, was in Yorba Linda, but authorities believe he had most recently been living under the freeway overcrossing.

The state's online Megan's Law database indicates Middaugh was a registered sex offender, which Anaheim Police pinned on a crime that occurred more than 20 years ago in San Diego.

Homicide detectives from Anaheim, Placentia and Brea are investigating whether Middaugh's slaying is related to the fatal stabbing of transient James MacGillivray, 53, at a shopping center in the 100 block of North Bradford Avenue, Placentia, on Dec. 21, and the murder of Paulus Cornelius Smit, 57, who was also homeless and whose body was discovered Dec. 30 at Yorba Linda library in the 18100 block of Imperial Highway.

ORIGINAL POST, DEC. 28, 2011, 10:10 A.M.: Anaheim Police were called this morning to the Santa Ana River Trail between Tustin and Lakeview avenues this morning to investigate a man down.

Officers and paramedics who responded to the 6:15 a.m. call discovered a dead, middle-aged
man who had been stabbed at least once.

Presumed to be a transient, the man has not yet been identified. Also unknown is his attacker or attackers. Anyone with information that can help homicide investigators is asked to call Anaheim Police at 714.765.1900.

Meanwhile, the river trail remains closed to foot and bicycle traffic.
