[UPDATED With Detroit Bar Comments] Detroit Bar And Local Musicians To Support Fight Against Cancer

Music has been said to have healing powers and the ability to soothe the savage beast. Local musicians and Costa Mesa's Detroit Bar are gathering to soothe the pain of the savage beast that is cancer Saturday. Come Together: A Benefit for Brita will help raise funds for Brita Corradini, 31, wife of Andrew Corradini (of Handsome G and several other local bands), who has been diagnosed with Stage Two breast cancer.  Brita is six months pregnant and will begin chemotherapy while pregnant. The couple have a one-year-old daughter, Alabama.

“Andrew Corradini is a local musician in a very small tight-knit community,” Vince Phung, Production Manager of the Detroit Bar, said. “He has played Detroit Bar many times over the years and is a personal friend of mine.” The Detroit Bar often hosts benefits for worthy causes. “This event is a showing of the close bonds local musicians and bands share with each other.  We help as much as we can when we can.”

Phung said that the idea of the benefit came from Trisha Smith of the band Honeypie. “Any band wishing to participate was allowed. The majority, however, are close friends with Andrew and his family,” Phung added.

Bands gathering for the cause with brief acoustic performances include Billy Kernkamp, Honeypie, The Devious Means, Two Guns, Ethan Hulse, Two Guns, Parker Macy, Midnight Hour, the Ultimate Bearhug, I Hate You Just Kidding, Golden Afternoon, Tully Wilkinson and Evening Hatch.

The family plans to raise $12,000 in the next year and have already raised $5,700 towards offsetting medical expenses. “There will be another fundraiser for Brita at the end of September at La Cave in the same manner, 2-3 songs with as many artists wishing
to participate in the fundraiser,” said Phung.

Brita has been documenting her experiences on her blog “A Reconstructed Life…” subtitled “When Cancer is Added to My To-Do List.”

Come Together: A Benefit for Brita at the Detroit Bar, 843 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa, (949) 642-0600; www.detroitbar.com. Saturday Sept. 3. $5 minimum donation. 9 p.m. 21+
