[UPDATED with Conviction:] Milorad Teodor Olic to Represent Self at Trial for Attempted Murder of His 80-Year-Old Father

UPDATE, APRIL 8, 9:17 A.M.: Representing himself at his trial on attempted murder charges, Milorad
Teodor Olic
employed a novel defense strategy.

The Santa Ana resident tried to prove his 80-year-old father stabbed himself repeatedly in the face and mouth.

Needless to say, the jury in Santa Ana did not buy it.

After a three-day trial, Olic was convicted of attempted murder and elder abuse with sentencing enhancements
for causing great bodily injury to an elder and personal use of a deadly
weapon.

The 44-year-old, who emigrated to the U.S. with his father from Yugoslavia, hated dear old “Da” since his parents divorced, deputy district attorney Barrie Pink reportedly told jurors.

“He got off on making his father's life miserable,” said Pink (reports the Orange County Register). “He wanted his father to suffer.”

Olic will find out at his April 29 sentencing whether he'll be getting a lifetime in state prison to figue out whether it was worth it.

UPDATE, APRIL 4, 12:39 P.M.: Would you hire the man to the right to defend you?

Milorad
Teodor Olic has decided to represent himself as opening statements begin Tuesday morning in a Santa Ana courthouse, where the Santa Ana resident will stand accused of trying to kill his elderly father.

The then-80-year-old man, who had been financially supporting his son for the past 18 years, drove Olic to a possible new apartment in February 2010. During the trip, the father mentioned he was cutting off his son.

That is alleged to have so infuriated Olic that he repeatedly stabbed his father in the face and mouth.
Olic, 44, was later charged with one felony count of attempted
murder and one felony count of elder abuse, with sentencing enhancements
for causing great bodily injury to an elder and personal use of a deadly
weapon.

Prosecutors are dangling a possible life-in-prison sentence over Olic, whose legal mind will be pitted against that of Deputy District Attorney Barrie Pink of the Family Protection Unit.

ORIGINAL POST, FEB. 19, 2010, 3:42 P.M.: Santa Anan Milorad Teodor Olic and his 80-year-old father were driving along
Monday afternoon, looking for an apartment for the younger man, when an argument broke out.

“Son,” Pops essentially said, “I'm cutting you off.”

Olic did not take the news well, according to police. The older man had been supporting the younger one for 18 years. A fierce argument reportedly ensued between the two.

With the car stopped in the parking lot of the Bally Total Fitness at 3701 S. Plaza Dr., Santa Ana, and father and son out of the vehicle, Olic allegedly decided he would be the one doing the cutting off.

He whipped out a knife and stabbed his dear old dad several times in the face and mouth, authorities claim.

After the attack, Olic is alleged to have run away. His bloody father managed to get help and was later taken a hospital that had him listed in critical condition with stab wounds.

The elderly victim managed to tell police that during the attack, his son had threatened to set daddy's Irvine home on fire.

Officers contacted Irvine police about the threat, and then went to Olic's residence at the Versailles on the Lake
Apartments near South Coast Plaza. He was not there.

But
later that evening, a security guard saw Olic walking by the apartments
and summoned police. Arriving officers had to use a Taser on Olic to
corral him, according to the police report.

He was booked at Santa Ana City Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.
The Orange County district attorney's office says that in addition to
that charge, Olic is up on elder abuse, with sentencing enhancements for
causing great bodily
injury to an elder and personal use of a deadly weapon.

At
Olic's arraignment today, prosecutors asked for $1 million bail. He
also learned that, if convicted, he could get life in state prison.

Bet he could use daddy's support now.
