ORIGINAL POST, SEPT. 5, 6:44 P.M.: Nadia Maria Davis Lockyer, the former Alameda County supervisor, estranged wife of state Treasurer Bill Lockyer and Santa Ana Unified School District trustee, has entered a Newport Beach drug rehab center after being charged with meth and child endangerment charges, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA). Police received a tip that Lockyer and her son 9-year-old Diego were staying with a relative Aug. 28 in an Orange
home where there may be drugs, and officers arrived to find methamphetamine and an aluminum foil tube with a burned end, the OCDA reports.

[ADDED LINE:] She was not at the home at the time, but later returned.

The mother displayed signs of being under the influence, prosecutors add.

Lockyer was arrested on suspicion of felony methamphetamine possession and misdemeanors being
under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug
paraphernalia and child abuse. She already entered not guilty pleas to all the counts at arraignment Thursday and was released
on her own recognizance to National Therapeutic Services, a drug rehab center at 4 San Joaquin Plaza, Newport Beach.

She is being represented in court by veteran lawyer Allan Stokke of Newport Beach and has a preliminary hearing scheduled Monday.

The California Treasurer's office released a statement saying, “Bill hopes Nadia has a successful recovery, and he also wants to make clear that Diego is living with him in the Bay Area and he's safe and sound.”

The veteran 71-year-old politician cited “irreconcilable differences”
in filing for divorce from his wife in July.

Bill Lockyer and Nadia Maria Davis Lockyer, California Democratic Power Couple, Split Up

The 41-year-old daughter of the late Santa Ana immigrant rights lawyer Wallace R. Davis won her Alameda County Board of Supervisors seat
in November 2010 thanks largely to $1.5 million pumped into her campaign by her husband's
own coffers.

A
month later, while battling a painkiller addiction spurred by injuries
she suffered in a traffic accident, Nadia Lockyer entered a
Kaiser outpatient rehab program. There she met Stephen Chikhani, a San Jose construction worker with a history of arrests for
methamphetamine use. They would go on to have a torrid love affair.

Any attempt to keep their trysts secret failed on Feb. 3, when police rolled up to a hotel where Mrs.
Lockyer had been roughed up. She wound up being hospitalized for head and neck
injuries after allegedly being beaten by Chikhani, who later claimed to
have acted in self-defense.

Different members of the love
triangle traded accusations in the media. Bill Lockyer claimed his wife
had ended the
relationship but Chikhani was still stalking her. Chikhani claimed it
was still on and that he had made a sex
tape with Nadia. Ms. Lockyer claimed Chikhani bashed her head into a
stone and that her husband–the state's former attorney general–fed her
drugs and suggested she kill herself.

UPDATE NO. 1, SEPT. 10, 12:59 P.M.: A judge in Santa Ana today granted Nadia Lockyer visitation rights with her 9-year-old son that include in-person encounters and phone calls.

Bill Lockyer, the estranged husband of the accused, had agreed to the modified visitation plan.

Having pleaded not guilty last month to meth and child endangerment charges, Nadia Lockyer remains free on bail pending continued treatment at a drug rehab.

UPDATE NO. 2, SEPT. 10, 5:02 P.M.: You'd never know Judge Gerald Johnston postponed today's pre-trial hearing based on all that came out of Nadia Lockyer's brief appearance.

Over the objections of her defense lawyer Allan Stokke, Johnston granted Deputy District Attorney Andrew Katz's request for the addition of a misdemeanor child endangerment count against Lockyer, who already faces felony drug possession, misdemeanor drug paraphernalia possession and misdemeanor child abuse charges.

The previous post mentioned Lockyer had been granted visitation rights with her 9-year-old son, but Johnston included a condition that Bill Lockyer be present for each one.

And his estranged wife, a former rising star in the California Democratic Party, issued the following statement:

I am extremely happy to be receiving the help that I need and getting
healthy. I hope to inspire many addicts to do the same.

She's due back in court Nov. 1 and back in rehab through at least that date.
