[UPDATED with Arrest:] Tyler Sanchez, OC Homicide No. 37: He and Pal Shot Walking in Garden Grove


UPDATE, AUG. 16, 4:02 P.M.: A gang member on parole for weapons charges was arrested Monday afternoon for the murder of Tyler Sanchez and attempted murder of Mauricio Marin, according to Garden Grove Police.

Ivan Castellanos, 21, of Orange, was arrested around 2 p.m. after being pulled over on Main Street at Katella Avenue.

Garden Grove Police Lt. Jeff Nightengale, the department spokesman, did not divulge
what led investigators to suspect Castellanos, whose booking
photo is not being released at this time as the probe progresses.
The weapon used in the shootings has yet to be recovered, Nightengale added.

Sanchez, a 22-year-old gang member from Costa Mesa, was walking away
from a convenience store with his pal Marin, 24, of
Garden Grove, just before 5 p.m. Saturday when they encountered a car
with a gang member inside, the police spokesman said.

That man, believed to be Castellanos, fired a gun at the
pair for reasons unknown. Sanchez died shortly after
arriving at UCI Medical Center in Orange, while Marin was admitted there in
critical condition.

ORIGINAL POST, AUG. 15, 12:46 P.M.: Tyler Sanchez was walking through Garden Grove with his friend just before 5 p.m. Saturday when shots rang out.

Police
arrived in the 12200 block of Lampson Avenue, near Janet Street, to
find 22-year-old Costa Mesa resident Sanchez and his pal Mauricio Marin, 24, of Garden Grove, on the ground nursing gunshot wounds.

They were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where Sanchez died of his injuries. Marin is expected to survive his wounds.

According to Garden Grove police Lt. Jeff Nightengale, Sanchez was a known gang member, and gang members are believed to have shot him. Marin's affiliation to gangs was not released.

description was provided of the killer or killers. Nightengale asked
