Sunny War is an exceptional musician described in a feature article by our sister paper, LA Weekly, as having “fingers like Robert Johnson's and the voice of Billie Holiday.” Long Beach's Bella Novela are a band highlighted in our Locals Only column last year as a trio ready to blow up. Those two confirmed performances alone are helping to lend credibility to the claim that this year's edition of Grrl Fair will be the “biggest and best” ever.
ORIGINAL ITEM, JAN. 19, 8:16 A.M.: Though International Women's Day is still months away, the organizing collective behind Orange County's annual Grrl Fair is already busy plotting its 10th anniversary. The March DYI riot-grrrl-inspired event is soliciting submissions on its Myspace and Facebook
pages for all the facets that make it a unique, women-centric
celebration: female-fronted bands, artists, spoken-word poets, short
filmmakers, speakers and more.
Code enforcement and permits were cited by the Santa Ana Police Department as the chief reasons as to why they would be compelled to shut down the unauthorized event at the 511 Creative Space. In response, clothing-and-culture store Calacas stepped in and hosted a scaled-down version of Grrl Fair as the bands played on.
Perhaps picking the Santora as the venue is strategic. Harrah himself isn't in the best position to be hectoring about permits these days, given the recent slap-on-the-wrist fines handed down by the city for his illegal signs on the building!
