UPDATE, MAY 5, 6 A.M.: Some Orange County police officers will be pulling extra duty tonight–Cinco de Mayo–by helping those who are normally on patrol by flooding streets known for drunken driving stops, arrests, crashes and fatalities.

The Newport Beach Police Department announced Monday that it will be among the agencies running one of these so-called saturation patrol operations tonight. The Tustin Police Department previously announced it will be doing the same. (See original post.) Funding for both department operations come from separate California Office of Traffic Safety grants, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
ORIGINAL POST, MAY 1, 12:49 P.M.: Heading into Cinco de Drinko, the Orange County Sheriff's Department is pouring more deputies onto South County streets in search of boozy or druggy drivers tonight, while Tustin Police will be doing the same (in Tustin, not South County) on Tuesday, May 5, Cinco de Mayo.
The sheriff's saturation patrols runs from 7 tonight through 3 a.m. Saturday in Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel and Laguna Woods.
In these operations, special patrols generally hit areas known for drunken driving stops, citations, arrests, accidents and fatalities.
Funding for the Tustin and South County operations come from separate California Office of Traffic Safety grants, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
