Treasure Island

Not that the pirate fad seems to be slowing down any time soon—Disney confirms it’s planning to release two more Pirates of the Caribbean movies after next month’s fourth installment—but fans of the franchise need to know where it all started: Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Published as a book in 1883, Treasure Island had it all: maps, chests of gold, murder, adventure. One-legged pirates with parrots on their shoulders? Yep, that was Stevenson. This holiday weekend, skip the egg hunt and head down to Laguna Beach, where the Playhouse’s Youth Theatre puts on a performance of this swashbuckling classic.

Fridays-Sundays. Starts: April 22. Continues through May 1, 2011
