Tony DeLap: A Unique Perspective

The first in a series called California Masters that delves into the lives and work of some of the most iconic artists of the 20th century, director Dale Schierholt focuses his lens on West Coast minimalist pioneer Tony DeLap. Born in Oakland in 1927, DeLap made a huge impact on the Southern California art scene after taking up a teaching position at UC Irvine in the mid '60s. There he would go on to work with and inspire future well-known artists Bruce Nauman and James Turrell, and further the minimalism movement with his geometric sculptures and paintings. Schierholt’s doc gains intimate insights on DeLap through candid discussions on the ideas behind some of his iconic pieces, and reveals new works-in-progress. DeLap will be present for a book signing earlier in the evening, and for a Q&A along with Schierholt after the screening. Free with museum admission.
