TONIGHT: Songhammer Plays Outside Blizzcon, We Sit Down With 'Em for a Bit

When we last checked in with Songhammer, the IE-based duo had just released their epic music video for “Death Is on the Way.” That video went on to win Blizzard's talent contest at the 2013 Blizzcon, and now the band is back to compete again.

Before the competition begins this weekend, we caught up with CroonHammer (Dustin Miller) and ShredHammer (Ben Stewart) to talk a little about their current projects, the free show they'll be playing for the 10th anniversary of World of WarCraft, and their new release, rap/rock battle “WAR Alliance vs Horde.”

OCW: What have you guys been up to since last Blizzcon?
ShredHammer (Stewart): Well, it's been a slow rise to world domination! After winning the talent competition at Blizzcon 2013, we started booking shows for the new year: Club Cosplay, San Diego Comic-Con, Marked Men V & Gam3rCon, The Geekie Awards, Stan Lee Comikaze and more. Just before Blizzcon 2013, we launched a video for the song “Death Is On The Way,” and our full length album, World of Songhammer.

What are your plans for after this year's convention?
CroonHammer (Miller): Next weekend, we are playing a zombie apocalypse event in Corona called Green Zone 11. You can be a zombie, a survivor (good guys) or a raider (bad guys). We are raiders. Don't get in our way or you'll regret it, but feel free to say hi! We are in production of a ton of new music, and have plans for several new music videos as well. We will also be playing at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show for some of our sponsors in January. For the latest up to date event info tune into our Facebook page.

Whose idea was it to do a hip-hop/rock song?
Croon: When I was in the 5th grade, Run DMC and Aerosmith did “Walk This Way” together. I suppose that's where the idea came from. Gotta give credit where credit is due. We also got to meet some really cool alliance rappers last year, and it gave us the idea that we could reach more people if we expanded our musical reach to cross over into other styles. As you can see we are incredible rappers. Who knew right? The double hammers of mad flow!

We are in secret talks with DMC himself regarding a possible collaboration for his awesome new comic book. How many of you readers out there in interspace want to see Songhammer and DMC hook up for an Epic rap/rock battle?

Tell me about the production for “War.”
Shred: We recorded, as always, in the Super Secret Sanctum Studio. Saxon and Isaac had to be issued Level 125 clearance… and then we just started droppin' the bass. We wanted the song to be a nod to the heroes of old: Run DMC/Aerosmith, Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, Black Sabbath. It was hard to fit everybody in one room with all our posses, Doom Hammers, and those golden-gats.

How did you guys meet Saxon and Lucas?
Croon: We dove into the seedy underbelly of L.A.'s underground rap scene looking for geek rappers with street cred. After a number of terrible misunderstandings regarding the need to carry melee weapons in L.A. nightclubs, and the use of magic in a commercial setting we tried Craigslist. We spoke with several applicants but only OldMman Saxon and Isaac Lucas survived the combat trials that were the final phase of the Songhammer audition process.

What was the writing process like and how was it different?
Shred: Croon came up with the hook for this jam just after Blizzcon 2013. He said, and I quote, 'Here's the chorus for the winning song for Blizzcon 2014!' And it was so! [Blizzard said we could compete again or just get hired to melt everyones faces. We took the gig!] We started working on some epic rhymes, and I wrote a bridge that everyone could fight to. When Saxon and Lucas showed up we pushed them into becoming Angry-Saxon & Ornery-Lucas. And then the battle really started gettin' on.

What should we be expecting Friday night?
Croon: Songhammer is playing live from 8:45 – 10 p.m. in front of the Anaheim Convention Center. The event is all ages and does not require a Blizzcon pass. You should know that we melt faces so please wear SPF 2000! You will laugh, you will cry. If you cheer loudly and if you play Horde, you will probably survive. No guarantees. Life is risk. If you are Alliance then we suggest you cosplay Horde. Don't get me wrong — we love the alliance too. No warrior is truly great without a great enemy.

Songhammer will play Blizzard's World of WarCraft 10-year Anniversary Celebration just outside Blizzcon (Between the Marriott and Hilton Hotels outside of the Anaheim Convention Center). Friday, Nov. 7 from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. All ages, free, no Blizzcon pass required. For more information, click here.
