Surfboards get all the attention. But what about the lonely fin? That's what Timothy Hogan aims to correct with his “theFINproject” Kickstarter campaign today.
The surfer and award-winning photographer is turning to crowd funding for his planned exploration of the art and story of the surfboard fin through a documentary film, a photographic study, a fine-art book and a gallery show.

Hogan is seeking pledges from $25 up to $10,000 and he's promising donors such “cool gifts” as t-shirts, a link to download the finished film in HD, an associate producer credit and even limited edition prints “glassed” like a traditional surfboard. Learn more about the campaign at theFINproject.net.
Meanwhile, Hogan is attending the Boardroom trade show in Costa Mesa on Saturday, when he can hopefully rub tanned shoulders with potential investors in his project. After previously being part of the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, the annual event for surfers, shapers, manufacturers, suppliers and retailers moved to the Orange County fairgrounds for this year's run.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and until 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 for one day, $15 for both and free for children 12 and under. Visit glmshows.com for more on Boardroom.
