The seeds of underground hip-hop had many planters in the late '80s and early '90s who went on to become legends. But every year, it gets harder and harder to find ones who are still alive or relevant enough to actively influence future emcees. So when venerated vets Dilated Peoples decided to reform and release their album Directors of Photography earlier this year, their decision to pick up the torch again lit a fire under the ass of anyone involved with them. Since 1992, the acclaimed combo of MCs Rakaa Iriscience, Evidence and DJ Babu have solidified their roots in LA hip-hop. Hence their latest tour and upcoming show at the Observatory on Thursday, dubbed The Dilated Family Tree.
Part hip-hop show, part history lesson, DP has roped in members of their immediate and extended family to create a flesh and blood timeline of conscious rhymes, world class turntablism, and talented word play. The stage will also be shared by The Alchemist (performing with Evidence as Step Brothers), Canadian rapper Mad Child, and young buck Fashawn (set to release his highly anticipated album The Ecology in early 2015) backed by DJ Exile. The rapper's new single, "Golden State of Mind" features Dom Kennedy. We've been watching the rappers development since 2009's buzz worthy debut Boy Meets World. He proved to be more than an average backpack rapper, standing on the cover of XXL magazine's 2010 Freshman Class issue. Legendary DJs Rhettmatic and Mr. Choc of the world famous (and OC-bred) Beat Junkies will be the hosts for the night.
In honor of such a momentous occasion, Heard Mentality is offering three pairs of tickets to a few lucky hip-hop heads with a fast finger on social media. How do you win the tickets? It's easy, find out after the jump.
