There is No God, at Least Not in Fullerton Saturday

Atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, scientific skeptics and those who are just curious converge on Fullerton all day Saturday to usher in THE END OF THE GODDAMN WORLD … EEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKK, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!

Oops. Check that. Those godless folks will be coming to hear 13 speakers at what’s billed as Orange County’s only secular conference.

Freethought Alliance, a non-profit group composed of 24 secular organizations dotting the map from San Diego to Fresno, hosts its seventh annual conference at the Howard Johnson at 222 W. Houston Ave. in Fullerton from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The aim is to promote critical thinking, scientific skepticism and the separation of church and state, according to organizers.

They are feeling pretty cocky due to a recent Pew poll that revealed more than 24 percent of Americans have no religious affiliation—a figure that increases to 34 percent among those under 30. Bruce Gleason, founder of Fountain Valley-based Backyard Skeptics and director of the conference, may not believe in God, but he believes these statistics indicate atheism is taking over the country.

Gleason, pointing to all the churches closing across America, figures many are turned off by the physical and psychological harm they see inflicted due to religion and pseudo-science these days. “If you aren’t angry,” he says, “you are not paying attention.”

Click here to register for the conference, where tickets are $50 in advance, $65 at the door.

“In conservative Orange County,” Gleason says, “this conference is an island of truth and reason–far away from the magical claims of ancient sheep-herding writers of fairy tales.”

Cue the lightning bolt.
