Last May, my besties released a wedding video to top all other wedding videos. In it, the bride (a drummer) and groom (a multi-instrumentalist) performed Metallica's “Master of Puppets” in lieu of the first dance. After we wrote about it here, it went viral–and has since gotten more than 350,000 page views.
Dennis and Annette
Ortiz-Diaz have since been featured all over the world as the “Metallicouple.” The duo, who had formed a Metallica tribute band (made up of Asian-Americans) called Trapped Under Rice because they wanted to become better musicians, had been fans of the metal band ever since they could remember. So when Metallica announced that they were going to be playing four shows in San Francisco (December 5, 7, 9, and 10) for Metallica Club members only for their 30th anniversary, the Diazes knew they couldn't miss it. They joined the lottery to win $6 tickets. Then the Metallica fan club sent out an email: the band wanted fans to send them audition videos for a chance to jam with the band onstage.
On Saturday, Dec. 10, that's exactly what the Diazes did. The band even played a clip from the Diazes' viral wedding video in the venue's giant projection screens–with Annette performing in her wedding dress–before the couple went up onstage.
Dennis says they never expected any of it to happen: “I was merely hoping for a meet and greet; I would've already been in heaven given a chance to shake Hetfield's hand! It all went beyond what I dreamed of.”
So are they doing anything with their newfound fame? Dennis says, “I'll just make a shirt for [our daughter] Lightning that says, 'Did your parents jam with Metallica? I think NOT!'”
Anyway, watch how it all went down in this video, made by the couple (Annette is a film editor as well):
