The Tempest

Forever a fountain of inspiration, another Shakespearian masterpiece gets a stylistic makeover for today's audiences. In this version of The Tempest, we're sent not to a mysterious island but to a traveling tent show in the 1930s. With the help of the show's co-producer, the otherwise silent Vegas magician Teller, The Tempest gets a fantastical dose of magic tricks—all the better to portray the almighty powers of sorcerer Prospero, played by Tom Nelis. Prospero's daughter, the beautiful Miranda (played here by Charlotte Graham), gets a slightly more appropriate update, and is a young woman in the story (in Shakespeare's original, she was only a tween when she got married—yuck). With music by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, and choreography by dance troupe Pilobolus, this Tempest is truly unlike any you've ever seen before.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Sundays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Aug. 29. Continues through Sept. 28, 2014
