The Silence of the Lambs

In 1991, cinema met a new Hannibal Lecter, who originally appeared to little fanfare in 1986’s Manhunter. Here, as played by Anthony Hopkins, Lecter was calm, intelligent, elegant—but give him the chance, and he’ll wear your face like a mask. It was Hopkins’ greatest role, and alongside Jodi Foster, they both scored Oscars for their performances, as well as enabling the film to nab Best Picture, a first (and only) for the horror/thriller genre. Hollywood has made three sequels/prequels since, and unsurprisingly, none has accosted audiences to the same success. This week, see the original in all its gory glory on the big screen. And remember to never, ever help a stranger load furniture into a van.
