More than 65,000 cyclists and volunteers from 44 states are expected to be riding today to raise funds to fight the devastating disease suffered by 29.1 million Americans. Orange County Tour de Cure's “Surf 2 Summit” will draw more than 400 riders on more than 40 teams, according to organizers.

The starting point is 30382 Vía Con Dios, Rancho Santa Margarita. Check-in/start times are: 6:30/8 a.m. Mountain 20; 7:30/9 a.m. Mountain 10; 6/7:15 a.m. 62 miles; 7/8:30 a.m. 25 miles; 8:30/10 a.m. 8 miles. There's a $25 per rider fee and teams must raise at least $200.

“Many people will participate in the Tour de Cure for camaraderie and a great day on two wheels,” says Allison Hickey, executive director of the American Diabetes Association/Orange County. “But the real reward comes in knowing that every mile they ride, and every dollar they raise, brings us that much closer to stopping this disease that affects approximately 250,000 people in Orange County. With diabetes growing at near-epidemic proportions, the need for funds has never been so great.”

Routes match each rider's level of ability, and spots along the way (depending on the course) include O'Neil Park, Doheny Beach and Dana Point Harbor. Cyclists will ride mostly on paved roads and bike paths, and all routes begin and end in Rancho Santa Margarita. Visit diabetes.org/surf2summit for more details or to register online.

And now we ride into Sunday …
