Super Bowl Weekend Kicks Off with Costa Mesa DUI Checkpoint TONIGHT

Orange County law enforcement agencies are urging people not to drink and drive this Super Bowl weekend, but the Costa Mesa Police Department is driving home the point tonight with a DUI checkpoint somewhere in the city from 8 p.m. through 3 a.m. Saturday.

The police departments of Garden Grove and Costa Mesa's next-door neighbor Newport Beach say they have joined the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the CHP and police and sheriff's departments statewide “in urging football fans to choose sides now: drinking OR driving. If you plan on drinking on Super Bowl Sunday, designate a sober driver to get you home safely.”

Those who choose to be sober drivers for others who have been drinking during the big game can gets perks and special offers at participating bars and restaurants through OTS's DDVIP mobile app that is available for iPhones and Android devices.

It's all part of what's called “The Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk” campaign, which reminds those who will be taking prescription or over-the-counter medication that drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment effects.
