Striking 12

Hans Christian Andersen's time-honored short story—and, ultimately, contender for most depressing children's tale ever written—about the little girl selling matches on New Year's Eve, gets a much-appreciated facelift in Striking 12, the latest stage production at the Laguna Playhouse. In Striking 12, we meet an over-worked, humbug New Yorker who decides to stay alone in his apartment on NYE and go to bed early. However, when someone comes to his door selling electric holiday bulbs (to offset seasonal affective disorder), the story starts to brighten up. Filled with a lively score of pop, rock and holiday tunes, this is a musical for anyone with a grinchy outlook on the season—though we will disclose one spoiler: no children freeze to death in the snow.

Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Dec. 3. Continues through Dec. 28, 2014
