Sobriety Checkpoints are Set Tonight in the Beaches Newport and Long

The Newport Beach Police Department is holding a sobriety checkpoint tonight and–praise be–the cops are disclosing the location.

It's at Newport Boulevard and Finley Avenue from 8:30 p.m. through 3 a.m. Saturday.

That would put it near City Hall, councilman!

The police department's Traffic Division justifies the operation, which is paid for with state and federal grants, by citing research that shows crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.

Long Beach Police also plan a checkpoint tonight from 7 through 3 a.m. Saturday, but that location has not been specified.
