Another Orange County owner of public storage facilities around the country is being recognized for abolishing the use of glue traps to kill mice.
Ladera Ranch-based Strategic Storage Trust, which owns more than 110 SmartStop Self Storage lots in 17 states, is to receive a Compassionate Company Award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and a big box of vegan chocolate mice, PETA announced.

The honor comes a month after Newport Beach-based Westport Properties, which owns more than 60 US Storage Centers in California and eight other states, received the same award (and treats) from PETA for removing and banning the devices from all of its properties.

“Strategic Storage Trust has made it clear: Cruelty to small animals is off limits at SmartStop Self Storage locations nationwide,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch in a statement from the animal rights group. “By banning glue traps, Strategic has spared countless mice, birds and other small animals a terrifying and painful end.”
To date, PETA has convinced six public storage companies to abandon the use of glue traps, which often cause critters to break bones, rip flesh and chew off their own limbs as they attempt to free themselves, according to the organization, which also contends the devices are ineffective because more mice simply move in to take the place of those that die.
