Simply the Best (AltWeekly Awards edition)

If you are told something you already know, can it still be called news? If you're a reader of OC Weekly, you already know that Rebecca Schoenkopf, who is as brilliant as she is beautiful, and the remarkable and indefatigable Gustavo Arellano are the best at what they do, so is there any point in telling you they are the best? A conundrum to be sure, but let's go ahead and err on the side of caution.

The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN) is holding its annual conference in Little Rock, Arkansas (why Little Rock? Masochism? Little Rock isn't even the destination of choice for Arkansans looking for a good time.), and on Friday the AAN announced the winners of the 2006 AltWeekly Awards. The envelope please:

OC Weekly dominated the large-circulation column categories, with Gustavo Arellano's “Ask a Mexican!” taking first place in the non-political column category, and Rebecca Schoenkopf's “Commie Girl” winning the political column category. The latter column was termed “funny — very funny” in a judge's comment….

To sum up: OC Weekly, dominant; Gustavo and Rebecca, the best. But you already knew that.
