Shooting That Injured One Closes Santa Ana Neighborhood and Locks Down School: Update

UPDATE, OCT. 16, 5:36 P.M.: A 20-year-man was shot several times in the upper body in the 1600 block of West Orchard Avenue in what is believed to be a gang-related crime, according to Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, the Santa Ana Police spokesman. Despite being shot, the victim ran east on Orchard, then north on Doreen Way and finally into a home in the 1400 block of South Doreen Way, where he asked for help, said Bertagna, who added the fellow later went into surgery. Police sought two gunmen on bikes, one of whom ran onto the campus of Jose A. Sepulveda Elementary School at 1801 S. Poplar St., prompting authorities to temporarily hold students in classrooms before later releasing them to their parents.

ORIGINAL POST, OCT. 16, 3:49 P.M.: Santa Ana schoolkids were no doubt rejoicing at the news that they were being let out early this afternoon. That is, they were until they discovered the reason: A nearby shooting that left a victim wounded.

Gunfire was heard around 1:30 p.m. in the area of Doreen Way and Edinger Avenue, where Santa Ana Police found the lone victim, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

A weapon was recovered, according to a Santa Ana Police statement.As a precaution, Sepulveda Elementary School was placed on lockdown and the adjoining neighborhood was cleared while officers searched for the shooter or shooters, police said.

Once it was determined the perpetrators must have fled the area, the school and neighborhood was reopened and schoolchildren were turned over to their parents, the statement adds.
