Shonen Knife
Nov. 3, 2011
Alex's Bar, Long Beach
Shonen Knife's been playing incredibly cute and powerful punk music since 1981. That's not an easy combination, so when the all-girl Japanese trio hit Long Beach last night and played for an hour and a half, more than a few bodies were bruised in the very large moshpit in the very small space. The energy at Alex's was amazing, and since we know that guitarist/singer Naoko Yamano's goal is to make people to happy through their music (“that's why I write songs
about our favorite things, like food or animals,” she said in our OC Weekly interview), it was obviously a very successful night.
Aside from classics (“Banana Chips,” “I am a Cat”) their encore was a solid block of Ramones songs (“Blitzkrieg Bop,” “I Wanna Be Sedated,” “Rock n Roll Highschool”) that sent everyone in on the floor bouncing off walls.
After the jump, a few pictures of what you missed if you weren't there.
