Santa Ana Tap Water Takes the Gold

We sometimes knock the city of Santa Ana around the block, catch up to it, and then knock it around the block the opposite way, mainly for shits and giggles.

But in one positive way, “Orange County's Downtown” will not be denied, and that is when it comes to the quality of its drinking water, which has taken the nation's top honor for “Best Municipal Water.”

Santa Ana Water Rates Among World's Best

The honor comes once again from the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Festival, which judged drinking water from all over the world before giving Santa Ana its gold award. The city received bronze and silver medals in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

“We are thrilled to receive the nation's top honor in our category this year and continue a strong record of high quality, award winning water,” says City Councilman Vince Sarmiento, who also serves on the Orange County Water District's Board of Directors, in a city statement.

City Manager David Cavazos added receiving such high praise year after year “validates the stringent standards we set for our tap water, which are above and beyond the drinking water health standards required by both state and federal agencies.”

If only they applied the same standards to those damn potholes in the street near the old Weekly office at … OK, that's not fair. Santa Ana deserves its moment in the sun, with a cool, refreshing glass of city tap water and a twist of limón. Come to think of it, the ice from the trays in the frig at our old office was better than the chlorine-flavored cubes we have here in Costa Mesa at our biweekly staff gimlet “meetings.”
