Santa Ana Holds DUI Checkpoint Tonight

The Santa Ana Police Department holds a DUI/drivers license checkpoint from 9 tonight through 3 a.m. Saturday.

The operation will be held in the area of 2400 W. Fifth Street, police announced.

Besides seeking to remove those drunk or drugged behind the wheel, cops will be looking for unlicensed drivers.

Why?

“The DMV reports that unlicensed drivers are 4.9 times more likely to cause a fatal crash than a licensed driver,” states the SAPD checkpoint announcement.

But the main objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs, according to the department, which encourages members of the public to call 9-1-1 if they encounter a suspected impaired driver.

Funding for the operation comes from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
