Roe v. Wade Wades into Newport Beach

A Roe V. Wade commemoration will be held Saturday evening in Newport Beach and—guess what?—it's a celebration of the landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

The Community Action Fund of the Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties' “Roe v. Wade 37th Anniversary Celebration” will be emceed by California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and feature Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sheryl WuDunn as the guest speaker. Considered a dynamic speaker, WuDunn is the author of Half the Sky: From Oppression to Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

Scheduled to venture into political enemy territory, at least via teleconference, is U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, who is scheduled to deliver a “special message.”

The event at the Fairmont Newport Beach begins with a private reception with WuDunn at 6 p.m., followed by a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. and the dinner and program at 7 p.m. A silent auction of works created by local female artists opens at the cocktail hour, and WuDunn is scheduled to sign books immediately after the program.

Ticket prices range from $150 for an individual ticket to $300-$25,000 depending on if you want to be listed in the program, attend the private reception or sponsor student activists. Contributions to the Community Action Fund are not tax-deductible because revenues are used for lobbying and electoral work. Donations from businesses and labor unions cannot be accepted.
