Friends Wilfred H. Brehaut Jr. and Joseph S. Fennessy founded Road & Track in Hempstead, New York, in 1947, but it struggled in its early years. It began growing under regular contributor and editor John Bond, who became owner in 1952. CBS
Publications acquired the magazine in 1972, followed by Hachette Filipacchi Media in 1988 and current publisher Hearst Magazines last year.
Webster succeeds Matt DeLorenzo, who followed the 20-year reign of Thos L. Bryant to become Road & Track's editor-in-chief in October 2008.
