Sam Adams “Utopias 2009” Released at 27% ABV

As reported today by the OC Weekly's sister publication, Phoenix New Times, Boston Brewing Company, the makers of Sam Adams, have released their biennial Utopias beer.

The beer, a barrel-aged strong ale that came out at a whopping 54 proof, is sold in 24-ounce copper bottles meant to recall pot stills. While that may sound like a great start to an evening, one bottle is the alcoholic equivalent of a bottle of Jägermeister. This is definitely a sippin' beer.

That, and the $150 price tag would stop any sane person from pounding one back anyway.

If you're reading this from Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington or West Virginia, so sorry: You can't buy this beer where you live, because you live in states with stupid alcohol laws and this beer is too strong for the delicate sensibilities of your legislatures.

Those reading from good ol' California, get your credit card out, and for heaven's sake drink this at home and hide your car keys first. And, of course, if anyone should want to instill some holiday spirit in your hardworking, local food bloggers and send us a bottle…
