Probe into Halloween Night Stabbing Murder of Enrique Avila Nets Two 17-year-old Suspects

Murder charges and gang related sentencing enhancements have been filed against two 17-year-olds in the Halloween night stabbing murder of a 19-year-old Long Beach man. The Long Beach Police Department did not identify the suspects because they are minors, although they will be prosecuted as adults so … uh … moving on …

Officers were called around 11:30 p.m. Oct. 31 to the 200 block of East 68th Street, where a stabbing had just occurred. There they found Enrique Avila, who'd received “serious injuries as a result of the stabbing,” according to a Long Beach police statement.

Avila was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family later established a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to cover the teen's funeral.

Meanwhile, Long Beach police detectives kept working the case. One 17-year-old was arrested on Dec. 12, and the second turned himself in on Wednesday, said police, who added one suspect is from Long Beach and the other is from Compton.

The investigation continues, and anyone with information is asked to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Donald Goodman and Mark Mattia at 562.570.7244.
