Out At the Movies: 'Making the Boys'

When The Boys In the Band debuted off-off-Broadway in 1968, playwright Mart Crowley could not have possibly foreseen the impact it would have on the world as he knew it. It was one of the first mainstream efforts to openly portray homosexuals as real people—with all their humor and sadness out for everyone to see. The Boys In the Band obviously sparked controversy—even within the gay community. While some loved the play for its groundbreaking subject matter, others loathed it for reinforcing gay stereotypes. The 2009 documentary Making the Boys explores the labor and the love of creating such a legacy. The Art Theatre hosts a special screening of the film this week, with proceeds going to HIV/AIDS and breast-cancer foundations.
