Last month, I had the pleasure and privilege of appearing on The Tom Leykis Show for three hours. The legendary radio host is back busting out his sage advice on women, money, and all the good and bad of the world on blowmeuptom.com. And while his views might not be everyone's shot of bourbon, the one thing everyone can agree on Leykis is that he's a bon vivant par none, and the man knows his liquors. His other radio show is The Tasting Room, in which Leykis speaks with booze makers and offers some of the best reviews in the business.
Because of this, I always love appearing alongside Leykis–the man gets so many bottles of alcohol to try that you can lose your liver in a week by just hanging around the studios. Tequila is his forté, and that's what the Professor served me as we were about to get on the air and do a live version of ¡Ask a Mexican!–and the tequila of the day was ON Tequila.
The name is a bit of a misnomer–its Mexican name is Nuestro Orgullo ("Our Pride"), but what gabacho would buy a tequila named NO? Nevertheless, the pedigree is immaculate: from Arandas, the legendary city smack-dab in Los Altos de Jalisco, the birthplace of tequila and mariachi. And all of ON's vintages are superb–the blanco is fresh and jolting, the reposado sweeter and deeper, the añejo almost reaching bourbon levels of complexity.
I had about two double shots of each, yet no nasty hangover lingered in the hours following the show. And there's an extra-añejo that one of the best tequilas I've ever had–but you're going to have to listen to Leykis for more info. Blow me up LATINO STYLE!
