Occupy Santa Ana Honors Day of the Dead


Guy Fawkes got the Día De Los Muertos treatment this evening, Occupy Style. The Santa Ana contingent of Occupy Orange County held a march honoring the holiday. More than 20 activists lined up at the civic center to have their faces painted by Bowers Kidseum volunteers Barbara Spiess and Sandra Cardenas, whose designs featured Mexican folk art renditions of Guy Fawkes à la V for Vendetta

Around 7:30 p.m. the group made its way down Broadway carrying candles and signs while forgoing loud chants in recognition of the holiday.

Protesters slowly jostled through throngs of holiday revelers handing out flyers along the way. The processional stopped at the at the Downtown Art Walk in front of a large fountain where it broke its silence with loud chanting followed by a reading of the Occupy Wall Street Declaration. 

 
Monday the group will go before the Santa Ana City Council to request permission to camp at the civic center. Council members Michele Martinez and David Benavides have placed the item on Monday's agenda. According to activist Alicia Rojas, councilman Benavides visited Santa Ana occupiers on Friday expressing his support for the movement.
