My, do we have humble people working at the Weekly. A couple of days ago, I heard rumors that our calendar editor, Erin Dewitt, and Dave here at SaFII both placed at the Orange County Fair for their creations. But I received no email about the victory from Dave (who emails Edwin and I about EVERYTHING), and Erin didn't say a word about it until I asked her–hell, she didn't even tell the rest of us Weeklings she entered something until I accidentally ran into her while taking in my chica's entries.
But the rumors are true: THEY WON!!!
The official listings for the Fair are only partially up–and even then, presented in a nearly indecipherable manner–but we can report that Dave won first place in the Strawberry Jam category for his strawberry and lemon basil jam. In the Biscuits and Scones section, his Southern butter biscuits placed second, while Erin received an honorable mention.
And while we're on the subject: my chica's habanero jelly won first place in her category, while her basil jelly placed third. If you're interested in learning the tricks of her trade, she's teaming up with KCRW-FM 89.9 Good Food host Evan Kleiman for a pie-making class this Saturday in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, I'll see if I can get Erin and Dave to contribute some of their goods for an exclusive tasting at some Weekly function or other, or at least for the rest of us here.
