FREE HELMET SHOW
Alt-metal (or would that be progmetal?) heroes from the '90s Helmet will be playing a free show at 8 p.m. on Aug. 26 at the Slidebar in Fullerton. Presented by Sunset Junction, Helmet will perform after Misfits cover band Dirty Black Summer. It's 21+, and since it is a free show, no tickets will be distributed. First come, first serve. REEVE CARNEY CAST AS JEFF BUCKLEY
Actor/singer/songwriter Reeve Carney, who starred in the Broadway production Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, has been cast as OC native Jeff Buckley in the film bio exec-produced by Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert. If you recall, Robert Pattinson was being considered as the lead in the film a few months ago, which will be directed by Jake Scott (Welcome to the Rileys) and written by Ryan Jaffe (The Rocker). They hold a rights package that includes the exclusive rights to Jeff's music and personal archives, all fully supported by Guibert. It's not the film that stars Penn Badgely (Gossip Girl) as Buckley; this film chronicles Buckley's life. He died at 30 in a drowning accident in Memphis, Tennessee's Wolf River. HOW YOUNG THE GIANT GOT THEIR VMAS GIG
So local-boys-made-good Young the Giant are performing a song on Sunday at the Nokia Theatre for MTV's Video Music Awards (VMAs). How did they end up playing at this big deal of an awards show? At a sold-out gig last April at Slim's in San Francisco, they explained, “This night was no different than most of the previous few months of touring, except that our friend Alex happened to be on hand with a video camera. He captured something sincere, a tiny glimpse into a night in our lives. We posted it on YouTube.” That night, “the energy in the room was contagious. We fed off the crowd's excitement—it was a blast. Flanked by friends and surrounded by enthusiasm, we did what we always set out to do: simply have a good time onstage and enjoy the moment.”
The band continue, “A few months later, executives at MTV stumbled upon Alex's video and apparently were inspired, not solely by the band, but rather inspired by the moment that was captured, by the energy of the crowd. Shortly after, we were offered the performance on the VMAs, and we met with the MTV production team and listened as they explained their discovery of the Slim's video and how it weighed heavily in their decision-making process.” From an Aug. 22 post.
