No. 75: Roti at Bangok Taste

Welcome to the
Weekly's list of our 100 Favorite Dishes for 2011! Tune in every day until we get to número uno! Now, on to the latest entry. . .

Thai Nakorn rightfully gets all the praise for local Thai, but I still find myself more often at Bangkok Taste because it offers rarities even Thai Nakorn doesn't offer: bubbling soups, sharp salads, and perhaps the strangest of them all: roti, which most Americans associate with India's flatbread scene and Malaysia's standard roti canai–but as a dessert?
]

It really is an inelegant dessert: just bread fried, then drowned in condensed milk. That's it. But Bangkok Taste executes it brilliantly, throwing on the condensed milk just after frying the roti, so the milk turns into a frosting–that which doesn't seep into the bread pools at the bottom, ensuring every bite will pop with caramelized crunch. Did I mention they fill up that entire Styrofoam carton with it? Crunchy, sweet, glory.
