Old Vine is always a favorite of mine, and lunchtime usually finds me ordering their quatro formaggi sandwich, a beautiful thing of–yep!–four Italian cheeses with a side of pomodoro sauce. But they have an even-better cheese sandwich available, one offered only whenever they cater or do special events. They call it a grilled cheese sandwich, but I call it the special-events grilled cheese because, well, I just explained why!

What I can't do is explain what's in there. Oh, you can taste the Gruyere and a cheddar, along with some type of mushroom. But if umami is the mysterious fifth taste, one that's inexplicable but really focused on the pleasure principle, then Old Vine's special sandwich is the umami sandwich: crunchy, salty, sweet, buttery, cheesy. It's large, delicious, and for $5, one of the better sandwiches in Orange County–but you're going to have to ask them what special events they participate in, as the sammy ain't available at Old Vine.
