No. 31: Starving Artist Sandwich With the Fixins' at the Crosby

Apologies for the crappy photo above, but the lighting at the Crosby is never bueno…

We're all still waiting for the Crosby guys to open their much-anticipated Grilled Cheese Stop, so in the meanwhile we must content ourselves with the genius that sparked this restaurant: the Starving Artist at the Crosby.

Last year, we deemed any sandwich at this SanTana spot the 79th-most favorite dish in the county (excuse that atrocious grammar), and while I still love Crosby chef Aron Habiger's creations–this past Monday, I loved a caprese sandwich on squaw bread–the simple genius of the Starving Artist beats them all: the blend of cheeses, the perfectly toasted bread, the shooter of marinara sauce with the wisps of basil to tie it all together, the incredible $5 price.

But now, it's gotten even better in anticipation of the Deluge.

For the past couple of months, the Crosby has offered simple modifications to its Starving Artist, as part-preview, part-promotion for the Grilled Cheese Stop. For a buck more, you can add pepperoni, prosciutto, or mushrooms to add even more flavor–or all of them at the same time.

I add them all–a five-buck sandwich turns into $8, but the flavor profile explodes to that of something that can cost $15. The saltiness of the meats, the earthiness of the mushrooms (or maybe it's another ingredient–can't remember right now haha) makes it a must-buy all over again. And if Habiger can pull off such a simple, yet brilliant, modification to what was already magnificence despite being distracted with opening a new spot (in a couple of weeks, I hear), imagine what's going to happen when he can concentrate solely on sammies???
