We're doomed, doomed…

… or maybe not.

The AP reports:

Evangelical broadcaster Pat Robertson said Tuesday that God has told him that a terrorist attack on the United States would cause a “mass killing” late in 2007.

“I'm not necessarily saying it's going to be nuclear,” he said during his news-and-talk television show “The 700 Club” on the Christian Broadcasting Network.

“The Lord didn't say nuclear. But I do believe it will be something like that.”

Robertson said God told him about the impending tragedy during a recent prayer retreat.

God also said, he claims, that major cities and possibly millions of people will be affected by the attack, which should take place sometime after September.

Before you start gathering ye rosebuds while ye may, it's probably worth mentioning that we are entering the ninth year and counting for Robertson's prediction of a disaster of– excuse the expression– biblical proportions hitting Orlando, Florida.

In 1998, Robertson warned Orlando that if Disney World didn't stop hosting Gay Days, “It'll bring about terrorist bombs, it'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes and possibly a meteor.” So far, no meteors, no tornadoes, no earthquakes and no bombs. The only problems Orlando has faced are a plague of boy bands (which seems to have abated), and the miseries one naturally expects when (a) you live in Florida, and (b) have The Happiest Place on Earth (version 2.0) squatting atop your city.

If God, Whom according to the Old Testament has previously shown a real flair for “mass killings” and wiping out cities, hasn't bothered to fulfill Pat's prophecy by flattening Orlando yet, it's probably pretty safe to assume He isn't going to go nuclear just to make Pat look good either.

But over at TAPPED, Tom Schaller points out the truly worrying thing about Robertson's announcement. “Robertson's prediction comes the same week we learned that a quarter of Americans believe Christ will return to the earth at some point in 2007.” That means a full quarter of American adults are likely to believe rantings of someone like Robertson.

Maybe we are doomed, after all.
