Orange County Gets $11 Million to Fight Homelessness

 

A federal agency has awarded a different kind of financial stimulus than you are used to hearing about lately, granting more than $11 million to the County of Orange in homeless assistance funding.

Part of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Continuum of Care Super Notice of Funding Availability grant competition, the annual funding is managed by OC Community Services as the lead agency, but grants are dispersed directly to several other organizations trying to break the cycle of homelessness.

Orange County Housing Authority $411,684 for 29 Housing Certificates for project-based rental assistance for disabled homeless;
 
Friendship Shelter $68,136 to provide supportive services to the chronic homeless; 
 
Veteran's First $211,664 for 22 permanent housing beds to serve disabled and chronic
homeless veterans;
 
WISE Place $100,593 for 5 beds, supportive services, and operations to provide
transitional housing to homeless;
 
Colette's Children's Home $163,898 for 24 beds, supportive services, operations, and transitional housing to homeless (Anaheim);
 
and, Colette's Children's Home $163,898 for 24 beds, supportive services, operations, and transitional housing to homeless (Placentia).
 
“This award is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of the county's partnership with cities, non-profit organizations, and other important stakeholders,” says Karen Roper, director of OC Community Services, in a county-issued statement.  “These 36 programs will provide families and individuals with the housing and support they need to achieve independent living.”

Surveys show 21,479 Orange County residents deal with homelessness
throughout the course of one year.  A 10-year plan to deal with
homeless is scheduled to go before the Orange County Board of
Supervisors in January.
