Cigarette Butts

Ever feel like you're not accomplishing anything, going anywhere, or doing anything meaningful? Yeah, so does everyone else. Everyone, that is, except the people who, instead of nursing a hangover until noon on a Saturday, are actually out doing something. On the California Coastal Cleanup Day up and down our gorgeous coast, some 50,000 (!)?volunteers (some no doubt still nursing hangovers) clean up more than 700 sites. According to the Coastal Cleanup website, “Since the program started in 1985, more than 750,000 Californians have removed more than 12 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast.” That's a lot of ugly, gross, unnecessary debris, my friends. And even if you're fortunate enough to live near or frequent one of our cleaner beaches, isn't it great to know you're doing your part to keep it gorgeous? If you live near one of the filthier how-did-our-natural-resources-ever-get-this-way-and-why-hasn't-anyone-done-anything-about-it beaches, like moi, a few hours of joining your fellow give-a-care citizens in shaking your head in disgust AND doing something about it is just plain good for the soul—and our lovely beaches. Get up early for once, and then treat yourself afterward knowing you've done something good. With all the crap littering the world as it is, doesn't that sound nice for a change?
