A long holiday weekend of DUI enforcement throughout Orange County kicks off with a checkpoint tonight in Newport Beach.
]
The police department's Traffic Unit holds the DUI/drivers license checkpoint at a mystery location in Newport Beach from 8 tonight through 3 a.m. Saturday. The only clue the cops are giving as to where that checkpoint will be is this: “DUI checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence.”
Miracle Mile?
Anyway, as mentioned at the top, this is but the first of anti-DUI enforcement that has been announced all over the county Memorial Day weekend. Check back Friday for a roundup on the other operations, which include more checkpoints.
Funding for these ops, including Newport Beach's checkpoint, is provided by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
