Newport Beach Cops Run DUI Checkpoint Tonight

The Newport Beach Police Department’s Traffic Unit holds the rare, non-holiday DUI/drivers license checkpoint tonight.

When?

From 8 p.m. through 2 a.m. Friday.

Where?

Beats the heck out of me, the department ain’t saying.

So just drive around until you find a location in town known for collisions and statistics for driving-under-the-influence arrests, a place where it would be safe for drivers to stop and officers to stop them.

Why?

“Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed three lives and resulted in 115 injury crashes harming 157 of our friends and neighbors,” says Newport Beach Police Sgt. Rachel Johnson.

The department notes that besides those who booze too much or take illegal drugs, prescription drug users can be subject to arrest for DUI, even if the meds were prescribed by doctors.

Consider Uber, Lyft or Curb if you need a ride, the department suggests.

Funding for this checkpoint comes from a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
