Newport Beach Checkpoint and Sheriff's Motorcycle Safety Enforcement TONIGHT

Newport Beach Police Department's Traffic Unit holds a DUI/drivers license checkpoint from 8 tonight through 2 a.m. Saturday.

But where, you ask?

]

Beats the hell outta me. Newps is among those cop agencies that only say “an undisclosed location within the city limits” with this further hint:

DUI checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

I'm gonna take a wild stab and saying it will NOT be on Linda Isle.

Meanwhile, “[i]n an effort to lower deaths and injuries,” Orange County sheriff's deputies will have special officers out all weekend–and starting today–to ensure motorcycle safety on the roadways.

“Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur,” reads an OCSD advisory. “Officers will be looking for violations made by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle crashes, such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, making illegal turns, or any other dangerous violation.”

This would cover unincorporated areas of the county and communities the sheriff's department patrols under contracts.

Funding for the sheriff's and Newport Beach Police programs comes from California Office of Traffic Safety grants through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
