Neuropsychiatrist Garrett Halweg Recounts the Monsters Inside Me on Television THURSDAY

As a neuropsychiatrist, Garrett Halweg has no doubt heard some crazy things. But nothing prepared the Newport Beach resident for the fight of his life with inner demons. These were not bad thoughts but actual beings deep inside his body that had doctors figuring Halweg's life wound end in Hoag Hospital's intensive care unit.

Halweg's amazing battle with the mysterious bacteria that infested him is among the stories to be presented at 10 p.m. Thursday on Animal Planet's Monsters Inside Me.

It was shocking enough seeing the physical manifestations of what happened to Halweg, whose entire body descended into septic shock, a potentially fatal, full-body inflammation that forced him to be placed in a medically induced coma. But what's even more disturbing are the popular program's interstitial images of parasites that can overtake host bodies. The one of the eyeless, worm-like creature with a wide open mouth revealing super sharp teeth is still giving me nightmares.

As you can tell from the photo on this page, Halweg did live to tell his tale, and an Animal Planet rep assures the Weekly, “Garrett has recovered from the bacteria and is doing fine.” But don't let that spoiler keep you from checking out his story in the episode titled, “An Amoeba is Eating My Brain.”

Hey, wasn't that an Ed Wood movie?
